World Food Programme (WFP) Partners with S-DIA Advocacy LBG to Empower Persons with Disabilities
The World Food Programme (WFP) in Accra, Ghana, has announced its sponsorship to S-DIA Advocacy LBG for the organization of the International Persons with Disability Empowerment Conference (INPEWDEC 2024).
This collaboration will focus on enhancing food security, nutrition, and overall empowerment for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Ghana and neighboring countries.
The inaugural conference, organized by S-DIA Advocacy LBG in collaboration with Inclusion Ghana, SWEB Foundation and The Sedofa Consultancy (TSC), is scheduled for November 28th and 29th 2024 in Accra.
With the theme “Empowering Persons with Disabilities: Promoting Inclusivity, Equity, and Sustainable Development”, INPEWDEC 2024 aims to gather over 300 PWDs, experts, donor agencies, and stakeholders from various sectors to address challenges faced by PWDs and develop inclusive solutions. The WFP’s involvement aims to equip persons with disabilities with the tools and skills needed to access nutritious food, build livelihoods, and thrive in inclusive communities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against hunger.
Mr. Kweku Kakah, Executive Director of S-DIA Advocacy LBG, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “The WFP’s sponsorship onINPEWDEC 2024 is a testament to the importance of collective efforts in empowering persons with disabilities. By addressing issues like food security and inclusivity, we are not just tackling immediate challenges but also contributing to long-term systemic changes that will enable PWDs to thrive.”
Why INPEWDEC 2024 is Important
Persons with disabilities in Ghana, representing 8% of the population, continue to face significant barriers including limited access to education, healthcare, employment, and social inclusion. INPEWDEC aims to address these issues by fostering dialogue and action to create a more accessible and equitable environment for PWDs.
The knowledge sharing, practical training and Vocational skills development sessions will introduce and help PWDs to grow the opportunities in the Agricultural value chain, ranging from Animal Agriculture to Vegetable production.
The conference will highlight the importance of inclusive infrastructure, policies, and support systems while offering PWDs the opportunity to be gainfully employed through the job fair component.
Mr. Kakah added, “The challenges faced by PWDs are not just physical, but systemic. Many public and private buildings in Ghana remain inaccessible, and discrimination continues to limit opportunities in education and employment. This conference is our way of coming together to find solutions that will break down these barriers and build a future that embraces diversity and accessibility for all.”
He added, “The conference will bring together stakeholders from various sectors, including technology, finance, health, education, and civil society, to collaborate on actionable solutions for empowering PWDs.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore innovations in assistive technologies, as well as gain insights from motivational talks and success stories of PWDs who have achieved remarkable milestones, he noted.
