Legendary Highlife Musician, A.B Crentsil Confirmed Dead

Celebrated Ghanaian Highlife music legend A.B Crentsil is dead. Sintim Media confirms this sad news from Music Producer Fred Kyei Mensah as he shared on his official Facebook page on Wednesday morning, 13th July,2022.

Legendary Music Producer Fred Kyei Mensah took to his Facebook page to announce the death of the “Moses” hitmaker and this is what he wrote;

….FAREWELL AB CRENSTIL.

The original composer and singer of the famous and controversial songs, ‘Moses and Atia’, AB Crenstil, has died!

He had a stint with a lot of bands before joining the Sweet Talks Band with Smart Nkansah and then his own band,  Ahenfo.

His hit songs, ‘Juliana and Obi ba wiase’, cannot be forgotten.

Biography of A.B Crentsil

Alfred Benjamin “A. B.” Crentsil (born 1943) was a Ghanaian musician. He is one of the “big three” of contemporary Ghanaian vocalists.

Crentsil won numerous Ghanaian music awards, including the Fontomfrom Evergreen Award, a special hhonor bestowedupon a musician with 15–20 years of continuous music experience. He died on Wednesday, July 13, 2022.

Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Jr was born in Prestea, Gold Coast (present-day Ghana), to the late Alfred Benjamin Crentsil Sr and Esi Yaaba in 1943. He was always known as AB junior until his father died in 1984 when he assumed the AB Crentsil name without the junior.

His primary and middle school education was the Takoradi Methodist Primary and Rev Cleveland Middle School respectively. After his middle-school examinations, AB worked as an electrical apprentice under his father, who was Works Superintendent of the technical branch of Ghana Railwaysat Takoradi.

While in middle school, Crentsil was introduced to the guitar by Mr. Thedoh. Crentsil became proficient in playing guitar and started singing along when playing it. He was simultaneously working as an electrician and playing with the Strollers Band owned by one Kwesi Donkor.

A.B Crentsil has played with the El Dorados, the Sweet Talks – which latter group in the 1970s, under the joint leadership of Crentsil and Smart Nkansah, were the resident band at The Talk Of The Town Hotel in Tema, with Crentsil as a lead singer and then finally the Ahenfo Band.

Crentsil opened a 16-track recording studio in 1990. “Devil” is among his bbest-known songs.

Crentsil continued to release new albums and won the accolades that are awarded to top musicians in Ghana. As he always says: “When burger highlife came and everybody loved it, we all joined the train because we also wanted to make some money, but one that I realized is that, highlife will always be the original form of music for Ghanaians and we will always come back to it.”

Born to a Liberian father and Ghanaian mother, Rock’s journey began in Liberia, where he spent his early years before relocating to Ghana in 2003 amidst the civil war.

He continued his education in Greater Accra, discovering his passion for music during his junior high school days at Oblogo D/A 1 JHS from 2003 to 2006 in Greater Accra, where he stayed with his aunt.

As a student at Sammo Senior High School in Cape Coast, Rock’s talent flourished, earning him a reputation as a skilled singer and dancer. He later became the entertainment prefect, setting the stage for his future success.

Pursuing a degree in Mathematics Education at the University of Education, Winneba, Rock connected with like-minded friends and officially launched his music career. Rock’s dedication to his craft led him to become the Entertainment Committee Chairman of his department.

During his national service in 2014, he met Eka One, a renowned sound engineer, in Assin Bereku. he collaborated with Eka One, and their partnership has been instrumental in his growth. Notable producers, including DatBeatGod and Eka One, played a pivotal role in shaping his sound.

Social media introduced him to Whisko, a US-based Liberian artist and businessman, who signed Rock to Unlymyted Entertainment in 2022, with Eka One as his manager in Ghana.

By day, Iam Rock serves as a professional teacher under the Ghana Education Service, but by night, he brings his vibrant energy to the stage.

Rock’s latest single, “Alewa,” produced by Eka One and directed by Dvice Keyz, showcases his artistry. He has eight tracks to his credit which includes; Romantic, Dah Lady, Charm, Bany, Alewa, Heat, Follow and Am Not A W-Rapper.
