Akufo-Addo is very insensitive, he’ll be spending GHS4.9 million on another private jet charter – NDC

Published

on

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has bemoaned the abuse of state funds by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

According to the NDC, despite the economic challenges the country is facing; the President is making international travels in luxurious private jets.

Speaking to press in Parliament, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the President’s current 10-day trip will cost the state GHS4.9 million.

“The President took off in the ultra luxurious LXDIO which costs the Ghanaian tax payer $14,000 per hour. This six nation tour we have done a conservative estimate and at the end of the tour the president would have spent a colossal amount of $777,000.”

“We have called this engagement to register our revulsion, our very strong opposition for the President’s continuous contemptuous and insensitivity conduct in chartering an ultra-luxurious executive jet when Ghana has a presidential jet which is in pristine condition.

“The shocking irony is that this latest conduct of the President happened at a time only yesterday when thousands of Ghanaians were in the street demonstrating against the regressive, the obnoxious and dreaded E-levy. Many Ghanaians are saying that this is a government that does not like to be accountable,” he disclosed.

The President is on a 10-day trip and his first point of call will be Brest, France, where, at the invitation of Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, he will participate in the One Ocean Summit, to be held on Friday, February 11, 2022.

Up to 40 world leaders are due to make “ambitious and concrete commitments” towards combating illegal fishing, decarbonising shipping and reducing plastic pollution at what is billed as the first high-level summit dedicated to the ocean.

Thereafter, he will, at the invitation of Dr. Mohamed Irfan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, travel to Georgetown, Guyana, participate as a keynote speaker at the maiden International Energy Conference and Expo by Guyana to be held from 15th to 18th February, 2022. Ghana and Guyana are developing close working relations in the oil and gas sector.

MPs’ salaries and benefits should not be different from those of teachers and doctors – PAG flag bearer Dr John Kpikpi

Published

on

The flag bearer of Progressive Alliance for Ghana (PAG), Dr John Enyonam Kpikpi, has called for a fundamental overhaul of the remuneration and privileges of Members of Parliament, arguing that politics should be driven by public service rather than personal enrichment.

He said Ghana must begin a broader national conversation on the salaries, allowances and conditions of service enjoyed by MPs, insisting that the current system has created incentives for people to enter politics for financial gain instead of genuine service to the nation.

According to Dr Kpikpi, there is nothing wrong with challenging a political class that has designed and sustained a system which primarily serves its own interests while ordinary Ghanaians continue to bear the burden.

“The motivation for going into politics must not be ‘to become rich quickly’. But rather to serve your country like everyone else is serving in the hospitals, classrooms and the civil service.”

He maintained that Members of Parliament deserve to be paid because “the worker deserves to be paid for his labour,” but stressed that their remuneration should be modest and comparable to essential public service professions.

Dr Kpikpi proposed that the salary of an MP should fall somewhere between that of a school teacher and a medical doctor, adding that, philosophically, it should be less attractive than the earnings of a doctor and only slightly higher than those of a teacher.

“I think the salaries of MPs should be pitched somewhere between a teacher’s salary and a medical doctor’s salary. All conditions of service and privileges should not be any different from those of teachers and doctors.
This will clean out those entering the role for their own gain and leave only those choosing the work because they care about Ghana.”

The PAG leader further argued that reducing the financial attraction of parliamentary office would discourage aspirants from taking huge loans to finance election campaigns with the expectation of recovering the money after winning office.

He said Ghana should instead build an economy where productive sectors offer greater financial opportunity than politics.

“If the goal is better financial prospects, we must make it more attractive for a young graduate to become a farmer growing rice or rearing chickens than aiming to become an MP.”

Dr Kpikpi believes aligning political office with the spirit of national service rather than wealth accumulation would restore public trust and attract leaders committed to the country’s long-term development.
