#GhanaDecides2024: Call EC to Order – Asiedu Nketiah to Peace Council

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has urged the National Peace Council and other key stakeholders to engage the Electoral Commission (EC) to expedite the declaration of election results, emphasizing the need for accuracy and transparency to maintain peace and uphold the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.

Ahead of the December 7 elections, the National Peace Council facilitated the signing of a peace pact by the two leading political parties to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

Although the NDC raised concerns about the council’s neutrality, claiming the initiative lacked an inclusive and balanced approach for fair engagement, NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama signed the pact. This proved his party’s commitment to Ghana’s democratic principles.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, December 8, 2024, Asiedu Nketiah reaffirmed the NDC’s confidence in its victory while expressing frustration with the EC’s prolonged silence.

His remarks follow the concession of defeat earlier in the day by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who congratulated NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama on his victory in the presidential race.

Despite this development, the EC has yet to officially announce any results, several hours after polls closed and collation commenced. This delay has led to mounting tensions across the country, with reports of sporadic violence in some areas.

The NDC has called for the immediate intervention of the Peace Council and other stakeholders to ensure the EC adheres to its obligations.

The delay from the EC has drawn concerns from political parties and citizens alike, with many urging the them to expedite the process to prevent further escalation of tensions.
