Elkanah Frederick Ayittey Calls for Immigration Compliance Task Force to Protect Ghana’s Interests

Published

on

Elkanah Frederick Ayittey, independent candidate hopeful for the Assin North Constituency, has stated that while Ghana continues to enjoy a strong reputation as one of Africa’s most peaceful and welcoming nations, the country’s hospitality must never override its commitment to enforcing immigration laws.

According to Mr. Elkanah Frederick Ayittey, Ghana’s openness has made it an attractive destination for visitors, investors, and workers who contribute positively to the economy and society. He noted that this spirit of hospitality remains one of the country’s greatest strengths. However, he emphasized that respect for the rule of law must remain paramount.

He expressed concern about the increasing number of foreign nationals who either enter Ghana illegally or remain in the country beyond the validity of their visas. He warned that if the situation is not properly managed, it could place pressure on local employment opportunities, public services, and national security.

Mr. Ayittey has therefore called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to collaborate closely with the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces to establish a special immigration compliance task force.

He explained that such a task force could be deployed to key public locations, including major bus terminals, markets, transport stations, and other large public gathering points. Their responsibility, he suggested, would be to assist immigration authorities in verifying the documentation of foreign nationals and identifying individuals who may have overstayed their visas or are residing in Ghana without proper legal authorization.

Mr. Elkanah Frederick Ayittey stressed that this proposal should not be interpreted as hostility toward foreigners. He reaffirmed that Ghana remains committed to international friendship and lawful migration. However, he maintained that every sovereign nation has the right and responsibility to ensure that those who live and work within its borders comply with its laws.

He further stated that foreign nationals who follow Ghana’s legal processes should always feel safe and welcome. At the same time, he argued that individuals who violate immigration rules must face lawful consequences, including deportation through appropriate diplomatic channels when necessary.

According to the Assin North independent hopeful, strengthening immigration enforcement in a professional and humane manner would help protect Ghana’s national interests, preserve employment opportunities for citizens, and maintain order within the country’s borders.

“Ghana must remain welcoming but vigilant”, he reiterated, adding that true hospitality thrives best in a nation where the rule of law is respected by all.
