How Africa Media Ad Sales Innovation started in Ghana

Published

on

Every industry reaches a point when established ways of doing business are challenged by changing market conditions, technology and consumer behaviour.

For Africa’s media and advertising industry, that shift is increasingly evident as traditional platforms compete with digital channels for advertising budgets and brands demand greater value, measurable results and stronger audience engagement.

In Ghana, Raymond Smith, founder of AfriMass Network, identified an opportunity to bring media organisations, advertisers, agencies, brands and technology companies into closer collaboration around these changes.

What began as an effort to examine how advertising sales could evolve has developed into a platform focused on what has been described as Africa Media Ad Sales Innovation.

The idea

For many years, advertising across Africa operated largely through traditional relationships and conventional sales models, with radio, television, print and digital platforms often competing individually for advertising budgets.

However, the expectations of advertisers and agencies have changed.

Beyond purchasing advertising space and airtime, brands increasingly seek measurable results, stronger audience engagement, innovative solutions and strategic partnerships.

Smith’s approach is based on the view that media organisations can play a broader role in helping brands and businesses achieve their objectives.

The focus, therefore, is not only on how much advertising inventory can be sold, but also on the value media can create for advertisers, audiences and the wider economy.

Bringing the industry together

The initiative has sought to connect media owners, advertising agencies, marketers, brands, technology companies, content creators and other industry stakeholders.

The objective is to create opportunities for these groups to exchange ideas, examine emerging trends and explore potential partnerships.

At the centre of the discussion is the changing nature of advertising sales, particularly as technology continues to influence how audiences consume content and how advertisers measure the effectiveness of their campaigns.

Why Ghana?

Ghana provides the initial base for the initiative, reflecting the country’s established traditional media sector, growing digital economy and expanding advertising market.

The broader ambition, however, is to create conversations that extend beyond Ghana and address some of the challenges and opportunities facing media businesses across Africa.

The approach is built around the idea that African media organisations can develop solutions suited to the continent’s markets while also learning from developments in other parts of the world.

The AFRIMASS Summit

The Africa Media Ad Sales Innovation Summit, known as AFRIMASS, was established as a platform for bringing stakeholders in the media and advertising ecosystem together.

Discussions around the summit are expected to cover issues including data and audience intelligence, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, content innovation, integrated media solutions, brand partnerships, creator ecosystems, programmatic advertising, measurement and accountability, media technology and new revenue models.

These developments are increasingly relevant as media companies look for ways to diversify their revenue streams and advertisers seek more effective ways to reach consumers.

Beyond traditional advertising

The changes in the industry are also forcing media organisations to reconsider how they define their commercial value.

Rather than relying solely on the sale of advertising space or airtime, media companies are increasingly exploring content partnerships, audience data, digital products, events and other forms of commercial collaboration.

For advertisers and agencies, this creates a need to consider media as more than a distribution channel and to examine how partnerships can contribute to business growth and audience engagement.

The role of collaboration

Smith’s vision places collaboration at the centre of this transition.

Media organisations, advertisers, agencies and technology companies operate at different points in the advertising value chain, but changes in technology and consumer behaviour increasingly require them to work together.

For African markets, this could also provide an opportunity to develop approaches that reflect local audiences, business conditions and media consumption patterns.

From Ghana to the wider African market

The initiative’s development in Ghana reflects a broader attempt to position the country as a starting point for conversations about the future of media advertising on the continent.

Its proponents argue that innovation does not necessarily have to originate from the world’s largest advertising markets. African media businesses can also develop ideas and platforms that respond to the continent’s own commercial and technological realities.

The broader question is how African media organisations can adapt to a rapidly changing advertising environment while building sustainable businesses and delivering greater value to advertisers and audiences.

For Smith and the team behind the initiative, that question remains at the heart of the Africa Media Ad Sales Innovation conversation.

MTN Ghana Engages Ghanaian Bloggers and Digital Content Creators on Cybersecurity, AI and the Future of Digital Finance.

Cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), digital finance and the rapidly evolving digital landscape dominated discussions as MTN Ghana hosted bloggers and digital content creators at its second Bloggers Forum at MTN House in Accra on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

The engagement, organised in collaboration with the New Media Association of Ghana (NMAG), brought together practitioners from Ghana’s digital media ecosystem to examine emerging trends, opportunities and challenges shaping the industry.

Delivering the opening remarks, Madam Adwoa Wiafe, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, urged bloggers and digital content creators to embrace the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence to support the growth of Ghana’s digital economy.

Cybersecurity was a major focus of the forum, with participants highlighting the growing need for digital users and content creators to adopt safer online practices as digital platforms become increasingly integrated into everyday life.

Discussions also focused on MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) and its growing role in Ghana’s digital financial ecosystem. Participants examined the importance of improving public awareness and promoting secure practices to safeguard digital financial transactions.

The forum further explored the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence on content creation, communication and the wider media industry. Participants considered the opportunities offered by emerging technologies while emphasising the need for responsible, ethical and informed adoption.

As MTN Ghana celebrates 30 years of operations, the company also reflected on its journey and contribution to Ghana’s telecommunications sector and digital transformation. The discussions provided an opportunity to consider the technological developments that could shape the next phase of the country’s digital economy.

For members of NMAG, the forum served as a platform for direct engagement with MTN Ghana, allowing practitioners to share industry experiences, raise concerns and exchange views on issues affecting bloggers and digital content creators.

NMAG President, Eugene Osafo Nkansah, called on MTN Ghana to consider introducing a dedicated data package for bloggers and other practitioners in the new media space.

He noted that a specialised package could help digital media practitioners manage their online operations more effectively and support them in carrying out their professional responsibilities.

The proposal received positive reactions from participants, with several practitioners describing MTN’s data services as reliable and expressing support for a dedicated package tailored to the needs of bloggers and digital content creators.

The forum underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between Ghana’s telecommunications industry and the new media community as technological advancements continue to transform how information is created, distributed and consumed.

The engagement also provided a platform for MTN Ghana and digital media practitioners to strengthen their relationship and explore opportunities for greater collaboration in Ghana’s rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.
