Ghana Hosts UNECA Census Workshop On Good Practice In Digital Census

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in partnership with UK office of National Statistic (UK-) organize a four days census workshop program on good practice in digital censuses.

The workshop was been hosted by the Ghana Statistical Service on Monday, February 21st, 2022 at the Accra City Hotel.

At the ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Information, Hon Fatimatu Abubakar who was representing Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Information Minister and chair of the Nation Census Publicity launched the ceremony were she highlighted the innovations of Ghana’s first digital census which attracted international interest in learning lessons from Ghanaian experience.

She also touched on the challenges to conduct a census successfully during the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, Government Statistician in his remarks shared what Ghana did differently during the census and the recommendations that they had to share based on experience and insight on the secret of Ghana’s census success – these included striving for excellence, the use of quantitative indicators for planing.

According to the Chief of the Demographic and Social Statistics Section at the center for statistics, Dr. William Muhwava commended Ghana for being the only country in the sub-region which conducted a census in 2021.

 

Over 70 officials from 17 Countries are participating in the workshop scheduled from 21st to 25th February, 2022 in Accra. The Aim of the session will focus on the strengthening capacity of National Statistical Office for using technology in digital censuses to improve quality, efficiency and timelines of results.

In attendance of the ceremony were the Deputy Government Statistician in charge of social and population Statistics, Dr. Faustina Frempong-Aniguah, Directors and staff of the Ghana Statistical Service, representatives from UNFPA, UNECA and UK-ONS and Workshop participants.

The SMAC Centre came alive yesterday as it played host to the much-anticipated CAF African Schools Football Championship Festival, an event that brought together football legends, aspiring young talents, and top football executives in a vibrant celebration of grassroots development.
The highlight of the day was the presence of African football legends such as Asamoah Gyan, Amanda Lamine, Adjoa Bayor, Karim Haggui, and Robert Kidiaba. These iconic figures didn’t just grace the occasion with their star power—they stepped onto the pitch, shared their experiences, and engaged directly with young players, teaching them the fundamentals of the beautiful game. Their mentorship served as a major source of inspiration for the budding footballers who dream of reaching similar heights.
The event also welcomed notable football administrators, including the CAF General Secretary and the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA)Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku, who both expressed their support for the initiative and its long-term impact on African football development.
This festival forms part of the CAF African Schools Championship program, an ambitious initiative aimed at promoting and nurturing grassroots football across the continent. By creating a platform for young talents to learn, grow, and connect with football legends, CAF continues to lay the foundation for a brighter future in African football.

The event was not only a celebration of sport but also a testament to the power of mentorship, unity, and investment in youth development.
