Ghana Hosts UNECA Census Workshop On Good Practice In Digital Census

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in partnership with UK office of National Statistic (UK-) organize a four days census workshop program on good practice in digital censuses.

The workshop was been hosted by the Ghana Statistical Service on Monday, February 21st, 2022 at the Accra City Hotel.

At the ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Information, Hon Fatimatu Abubakar who was representing Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Information Minister and chair of the Nation Census Publicity launched the ceremony were she highlighted the innovations of Ghana’s first digital census which attracted international interest in learning lessons from Ghanaian experience.

She also touched on the challenges to conduct a census successfully during the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, Government Statistician in his remarks shared what Ghana did differently during the census and the recommendations that they had to share based on experience and insight on the secret of Ghana’s census success – these included striving for excellence, the use of quantitative indicators for planing.

According to the Chief of the Demographic and Social Statistics Section at the center for statistics, Dr. William Muhwava commended Ghana for being the only country in the sub-region which conducted a census in 2021.

 

Over 70 officials from 17 Countries are participating in the workshop scheduled from 21st to 25th February, 2022 in Accra. The Aim of the session will focus on the strengthening capacity of National Statistical Office for using technology in digital censuses to improve quality, efficiency and timelines of results.

In attendance of the ceremony were the Deputy Government Statistician in charge of social and population Statistics, Dr. Faustina Frempong-Aniguah, Directors and staff of the Ghana Statistical Service, representatives from UNFPA, UNECA and UK-ONS and Workshop participants.

Professor Goski Alabi has reminded leaders and institutions that true transformation begins with mindset. Speaking at the 2025 Ghana 100 Trailblazer Awards, she said,

“Systems and policies, without the right attitude and mindset, don’t promote change.”

She made the statement while addressing the theme of the event, encouraging individuals to adopt the right mindset in order to drive meaningful progress. Her words resonated with an audience of high-level professionals, policymakers, and innovators gathered on Friday, 11 July 2025, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

Later in the evening, Professor Alabi, ag. Vice-Chancellor of Accra Metropolitan University was honored as a Special Guest and Awardee. She was recognized for her pioneering work in tertiary education, particularly her leadership in expanding Open and Distance Learning through Ghana’s first accredited open university, which she co-founded.

The Ghana 100 Trailblazer Awards, organized by The Business Executive Group, celebrate individuals who are redefining excellence in fields including business, public service, education, gospel music, and broadcasting.
